MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — As Mattoon's water woes continue, the city banded together to make sure everyone has access to clean, safe water.
Families lined up in Lytle Park starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning to get a 5-gallon bucket of water and a case of bottled water.
Mayor Rick Hall said the community showed up for one another, with dozens of volunteers showing up to help.
"This pulls towns together — we get calls from the Mayor of Charleston. And 'what can I do?' or 'what can I do to help?' So, it's not just Mattoon, it's everybody around us," Hall said.
Travis Spencer, a local pastor at the Fields Church, helped organize the volunteers. He said the community answered the call.
"When they pull up, we ask if we can load it for them, and they're just so thankful," Spencer said. "It's hot, it's tiring, but it's rewarding at the same time. You forget how hot it is, you just serve."
Water will be available Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
