MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois State police released body camera footage Monday of a wanted man who died by suicide in February after an encounter with Mattoon police.
Mattoon police responded just after 7:30 a.m. Feb. 13 to the 1400 block of East Broadway Avenue after learning a man wanted for armed robbery was reportedly in the area.
ISP identified the man as 38-year-old De’von Coleman-Canady of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was wanted on an active warrant related to an armed robbery in Kalamazoo.
Police found Coleman-Canady in the passenger seat of a vehicle in a hotel parking lot and told him to get out.
Coleman-Canady told officers he had intended to shoot himself since he did not want to go back to prison.Â
Police said he had shot himself moments later and was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Â
Mattoon police said no officers shot their guns during the encounter, which ISP confirmed in its investigation.Â
