DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur Fire Department is offering free smoke alarms as part of the statewide "Be Alarmed!" program.

The program provides free 10-year, sealed smoke alarms and free fire safety education for eligible homeowners.

According to the City of Decatur, DFD crews can visit homes, review basic fire-safety tips, check the home for fire hazards, help with planning a fire escape route, and install up to three life-long smoke alarms for free.

The program applies to homeowners in privately-owned, owner-occupied homes. It does not apply to rentals, hotels, leases or similar properties.

Anyone looking to check eligibility or schedule an appointment is asked to call DFD Fire Station 1 at 217-424-2811.
