DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Decatur Park District Board of Commissioners approved the construction of a new activity center for mature adults on Wednesday.Â
According to the Decatur Park District, the facility will be located near the Scovill Park West Activity Center on W Main Street.Â
The Park District said the center will "significantly expand" its offerings for adults 55+, and will be a space for older adults to stay active and engage with others.Â
The center will include a coffee bar, eight activity rooms, an indoor walking track, pickleball courts, a crafting space, and a game room with shuffleboard, billiards, darts and a golf simulator.Â
There will also be a 600-seat event space available for various events and weddings.
"This new Activity Center, combined with our strong programming and existing services, reflects the Park Board’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our community’s older adults. As the population of residents ages 55 and older continues to grow, this investment ensures we are prepared to meet their needs and keep them connected and engaged," said Clay Gerhard, executive director of the Park District, in a statement.Â
Construction is slated to begin in May and is expected to be completed in summer 2027.Â
