(WAND) — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias led a legislative effort to change the library Equalization Aid Grant formula to free up more funding for Illinois libraries.

The change in formula increases the eligibility from 17 public libraries serving 77,000 residents across the state to 108 serving over 700,000 while freeing up additional funds.

"While the federal government seeks to scrap programs and slash critical funding for libraries nationwide, Illinois is investing in our residents and communities," said Giannoulias. "As a result, more underserved and rural libraries will have access to new funding, quality library materials and essential services."

Libraries throughout central Illinois that will receive funding include:

  • Westville Public Library District, Westville, IL ($55,425.18)
  • Beardstown Houston Memorial Public Library, Beardstown, IL ($54,189.09)
  • Danville Public Library, Danville, IL ($41,170.18)
