(WAND) - Millions will be traveling next week for Thanksgiving, which is expected to be the busiest travel period in 15 years.

With all the extra people on the road, AAA says that 81 million travelers will venture at least 50 miles from home between next Tuesday and Sunday.

In response, local law enforcement is stepping up patrols, including the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heurman encourages travelers not to drink and drive.

"You may have confidence in your driving, but what about that other driver who may be distracted driving or may be intoxicated, and they hit you and you are not seatbelted in, now you are ejected and a fatality occurs," Heurman said.

"I always like to stress that because unfortunately people think that it can't happen to them, and there are thousands of cases that people thought it wouldn't happen to them, and it did happen to them," Heurman continued.

If you do need to get away from your nagging in-laws, be sure to leave early and most importantly, put the phone down.
