(WAND) - Illinois leaders are reminding the community about a problem facing seniors in the state.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on June 15.Â
Around one in 10 Americans age 60 and older have experienced elder abuse, while one in five older adults reported it during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Illinois Department of Aging expressed the importance of knowing the warning signs and speaking up about any suspected abuse of older adults.
Older adults experiencing suspected abuse in a long-term care facility can contact an ombudsman online or call the Illinois Department of Public Health's nursing home hotline at 800-252-4343.Â
