(WAND) - The Illinois Insurance Association is demanding "fairness and impartiality" in response to town halls hosted by the Illinois Secretary of State's office.

The office has held "Driving Change" virtual town hall meetings to gather input from Illinois residents on fair rates from auto insurers.

Illinois Insurance Association Executive Director Kevin Martin told WAND News that no one from the Secretary of State's office has "engaged experts" from the insurance industry.

"Political theater is not the best approach for public policy development and risks doing a disservice to the millions of Illinoisans who rely on a stable, competitive insurance marketplace," Martin said in a statement to WAND.

"The insurance industry would welcome a fair discussion and looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders, elected officials and policymakers," Martin continued.

WAND News reached out to the Secretary of State's office and received the following response from Secretary Alexi Giannoulias:

"For over two years, our office has been asking for the insurance industry to show us – and the residents of Illinois – how they set rates and what they consider fair. What data do they use to determine that people with bad credit are a riskier insurance investment than those who have been caught and convicted of a DUI?

That’s why we wanted to hear directly from constituents about their experiences, which is not only an important step in our fact-finding process but also a critical function of every elected official who is accountable to the people of Illinois.

And we’re clearly not alone. There is now a lawsuit filed by the Department of Insurance, alleging the same lack of transparency exists in homeowners’ insurance ratemaking."
