SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A human skull was found in a creek in Springfield. 

The skull was found near the 6200 block of Winterberry Lane on September 20 around 1 p.m. 

The skull was processed by the Sangamon County coroner, examined by an anthropologist, and sent to the Illinois State Police for possible DNA extraction. 

The Springfield Police Department and the coroner are continuing to investigate.
