Mattoon infrastructure improvements

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — The City of Mattoon was awarded over $3.7 million in state funding to support construction of a new Loop Road and expansion of Dettro Drive.

The money is coming from Governor JB Pritzker's infrastructure program, and the city says it is a major investment in public safety, traffic flow and economic growth.

The project will add a new north-south roadway west of Dettro Drive, improving access to IL-16. Lanes will also be expanded to better serve traffic from the Emerald Acres Sports Connection and nearby businesses.

According to the City of Mattoon, over 100 accidents occurred near the Dettro/IL-16 intersection between 2013 and 2022. The city says these improvements will make travel safer.

"This project will enhance safety, ease congestion, and ensure Mattoon is ready to welcome new families, visitors, and businesses," said Mattoon Mayor Rick Hall. "It's a major step forward for our community."

Construction planning is underway, with work set to begin in Summer 2026 after final IDOT approval.
