MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) — A new animal shelter opening in Piatt County has reached its next step.

The shelter said it has officially received building permits and is now awaiting a construction start date from a contractor.

The shelter broke ground in fall 2025 and will be located at 1203 Raymond Road in Monticello. The shelter will be a nearly 5,000 square foot, modern facility.

According to a Facebook post from the shelter, their current facility no longer meets the needs of the animals they serve, and the new building will allow them to provide better care, reduce stress and help more animals.

The shelter is also moving closer to its donation goal of $1.5 million, currently sitting at just over $1.2 million in donations. More information on the new facility and how to donate can be found here.
