PAXTON, Ill. (WAND) - The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down near Paxton in Ford County on Monday.Â
Paxton is about 30 minutes from the Champaign-Urbana area.Â
NWS said the tornado had a peak wind of 85 mph wind, marking it the 38th tornado in the central Illinois area ahead of the summer months.
Illinois leads the country by a wide margin in number of tornadoes in 2026, well ahead of traditional tornadic power states like Oklahoma and Missouri.Â
