URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — The University of Illinois's Real Time Information Center (RTIC) uses over 4,000 cameras to give the University of Illinois Division of Safety up-to-date information.

The system tracks roughly 4,000 integrated cameras on campus, and can be streamed live with audio and video, including squad cars and officer-worn body cameras. While officers are responding to calls, an RTIC analyst will go through footage and send photo and video evidence to help officers find potential suspects.

"If you commit a crime on campus, you might want to look out because you're probably on camera somewhere," said UIPD Deputy Chief Tim Hetrick.

UIPD recently launched a drone-first responder program. Officers can search for missing persons, complete accident and crime scene reconstruction, monitor traffic patterns and even inspect infrastructure.

They recently implemented a transparency portal for all drone flights. Community members can see the routes of all drone flights and when drones are flying.

Next update for the department will be rolling out Axon Fusus Community Connect. The program will allow community members to register their cameras with UIPD, letting officers know that you have a camera. Community members can integrate their cameras to give UIPD access to their camera networks.

Cameras are under complete control of the owners, and owners can lock down their cameras when they want. UIPD doesn't have access to owners' camera settings.
