DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - Vermilion County is one step closer to building a solar farm.
The Vermilion County Board discussed a building permit Thursday night that has to be approved before construction can start.
The five megawatt facility will be east of Rankin and about 21 acres in size.
The board said Vermilion County is expected to receive substantial tax revenue from the solar farm.
"They intend to pay a very good sum of money to the landowners upon whose property these projects are built. And our benefit is that we are able to tax the solar farm operator," said Vermilion County Board Chairman Steve Miller.
Miller said some residents are concerned about the solar farm.
"They're worried about the impact that might come from this not being in real crop production, which could mean an increase in weeds. It could have an impact on drainage tiles if there were drainage tiles present," Miller said.
Miller added that there will be tall vegetation to keep landowners from seeing the solar panels. The board is expected to vote on the building permit on Feb. 10.
