DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - City leaders are working to revitalize Decatur.

The project is more than just adding new buildings. It is a long-term investment for the future.

"It's important for Decatur right now, especially for residents, because this is about quality of life. It means safer neighborhoods, stronger housing, better streets and access to jobs and services," said Lacie Elzy, economic and community development director.

The three-year plan prioritizes economic development, modern technology and stronger neighborhoods. Lacie Elzy is the economic and community development director for the city.

"Long term, this plan positions Decatur for sustainable growth. It will help us compete for state and federal funding. It will help attract private investment and avoid cycles of disinvestment. We're building a foundation that will help support the next generation," Elzy said.

The targeted areas for revitalization are Millikin Heights, Martin Luther King Jr. and Jasper Street. Funding for this year has already been allocated through local, state and federal funds. 2027-2029 funding will be determined in the future.

"Jasper Street corridor, we were awarded $9.6 million from the federal government to implement a few different initiatives, including a multi-pedestrian pathway, some road and curb improvements, some transit enhancements over there," Elzy said.

Community feedback is critical for a project like this. Elzy encourages people to share their thoughts by emailing revitalize2629@decautril.gov.

Decatur City Council is expected to vote on this plan in March.
