DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Now operating in its first phase, Innovafeed will become the world’s largest insect protein plant.

The second phase will include a much larger facility located between ADM and Richland Community College, an area which has seen considerable economic growth in recent years and is expected to continue to grow.

Insect protein is used for animal and plant nutrition. Black soldier flies are reared in an indoor farm and then processed into insect meal, oil, and soil amendment

Innovafeed is a French-based company expanding into central Illinois. When the second phase is built it will eventually employ 250 to 300 people.

Clément Ray, the CEO of Innovafeed said the company chose Decatur for its first U.S. operation "because of its location in the heart of the Midwest corn belt and its proximity to our partner ADM and other agribusiness leaders."
