BRACEVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A young mother was killed while helping someone on Interstate 55, and Illinois State Police investigators are searching for the driver who hit her.
On New Year's Day of 2024, a vehicle crashed and rolled over on I-55 in Grundy County. Multiple good Samaritans stopped to help the driver, who was trapped inside his vehicle. Destiny Dixon, a 23-year-old mother of two young daughters, was one of the people who stopped to help.
While Dixon was standing near the rolled vehicle, a Mitsubishi Endeavor drove through the scene of the crash at a high rate of speed. Dixon and a man were hit. She died as a result of her injuries.
The driver of the Mistubishi fled the scene and was last seen in the area of the Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 interchange.
The vehicle has been identified as a dark grey 2010-2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor. The Mitsubishi sustained significant damage to the front left corner, left side headlight, and left side mirror.
