URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — "I've told people that you're going to be amazed when you see it..." Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin said in the Hotel Royer lobby with a smile. "It's just beautifully done."

After years of reconstruction, the iconic Urbana hotel is celebrating it's soft opening. Hotel Royer was originally built back in 1923, with an added extension built in 1980.

"We have preserved the historic elements, with a touch of modern..." explained Joseph Prior, Corporate Director of Operations and Development. Prior is proud of their overall design choices, making sure to keep the hotel's old school charm while adding today's modern look.

The hotel features 131 rooms for guests to stay in, as well as banquet halls, a restaurant, a bar, a pool and a fitness center. The lighting and paint colors combine a nod to the 20's, while bringing in new additions to the building.

"We've put an enormous amount of effort and time in, and will be investing public funds into this hotel..." added Mayor Marlin, who has been a part of this construction for the last few years.

With it's location in the heart of Downtown Urbana, she is excited to watch as more people stay in the hotel. Mayor Marlin is hopeful to see a boom in business and tourism in the city, especially ahead of commencement ceremonies and warmer weather.

"The location is perfect for the University, for Carle Hospital, and for visitors in the community. I know the downtown businesses are looking forward to increased traffic!" Marlin said with a smile.
