DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Livestock shows give kids the chance to learn during a hands-on experience instead of sitting in the classroom.
Happening at most county fairs this summer, showing animals provides kids with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn valuable lessons.Â
Macon County Fair Board President Evan Hall said, "The most important thing is walking away with those citizenship skills. Those leadership skills, the work ethic that comes with showing livestock. Those things are timeless."
In addition to learning about responsibility and leadership, these junior showmen have a unique chance to learn more about animal science. While livestock showing has changed over the years, and many of the kids participating focus on genetics and how they can further the species.Â
"Showing livestock is a lot different that it was 40 years ago, nowadays there is so much more focus on genetics, and what you'll see is it's not just about taking a good-looking calf."
While this is a long standing the tradition organizers of the livestock show say that the lessons these kids learn are timeless. It also provides the showmen the chance to learn more about the animals, while teaching others.
"They learn a lot about animal science, animal nutrition, things like that come in handy, but the most important thing is what can we teach other people, you know, so sometimes kids get a chance to teach their peers about livestock and where their food came from," said Hall.
The event has become a staple at county fairs across the state, and organizers in Macon County hope this is a tradition they can continue to teach for years to come.Â
"This isn't just a tradition," said Hall. "It is something for the next generation they need this, they deserve this."
There are several different types of animals that can be shown at the fair including swine, goats, rabbits, and even dairy and beef cattle. If your child is interested in showing animals, you can start with small and contact your local fair office for help.Â
