MAHOMET, Ill. (WAND) — As the school year begins, students in Mahomet-Seymour Community Schools are facing limited classroom space.

The district has announced that it's turning to voters this November, proposing a $112.8 million dollar question on the ballot. The money, if passed, will serve to help the district build a new 2nd and 3rd grade building, as well as demolish the existing junior high and build a new one.

Superintendent Kenneth Lee said with increased enrollment, it's been hard to find enough classroom space. "We've added two portable buildings, which are for portable classrooms," said Lee. "And then there are classrooms that have temporary walls down the middle of them at the junior high to serve students on both sides of that."

The district is hopeful that voters will pass the referendum.

If it is not passed, the district will continue to remain as flexible as possible using their portable classrooms.
