SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) -- Serving up delicious meals to Springfield natives and travelers since 1924. Maid Rite celebrated their 100th anniversary this weekend of being the first drive thru in the nation.Â
Amy Beadle, Marketing Manager for Visit Springfield says, "We're located along route 66 in the state of Illinois and building up to the 2026 100th anniversary it is really important, for us, for people to understand the history that is here in Springfield and having businesses like this that people flock to."Â
In order to celebrate this major milestone, there were people dressed in costumes, a classic car show, music, and the prices of their iconic burgers were rolled back to the original prices of only a nickel. Organizers hoping the event will bring back memories for visitors that have frequented the restaurant for years.Â
"I can't tell you how many people have stopped me this morning and said, I remember when my dad brought me here as a kid. I remember when my grandpa brought me here. So, there's so many memories associated with a place like this that, you know that they are few and far between anymore."
The family-owned business is working hard to keep traditions alive and honor the history of the business. While it is not a part of the franchise it has maintained a long-standing positive reputation within the community and stayed true to the original menu from the 1920's.Â
"It's always maintained the iconic maid rite name, which is not associated with the maid rite franchise which is kind of cool and it still has this longevity, and the food is exactly the same so it's the same exact sandwich you would have had back in the 1920s."
Brining the community together to highlight the accomplishments and success of one of the many historic businesses in Springfield. The support of the Maid Rite loyal customers showing through as the line wrapped around the block to get a taste of the famous food made at Maid Rite.Â
