CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The man accused of stabbing two Champaign firefighters and an EMT during a mental health call has been denied pretrial release.
On Wednesday, Champaign County Associate Judge, Hon. Brett Olmstead ordered Trevor Lewis to be detained pending trial.
Lewis stands accused of attempted murder and aggravated battery. According to Champaign Police, on Sept. 4 first responders were called to Neil Street and Buena Vista Drive because Lewis was experiencing a mental health crisis. Police said Champaign Fire and Arrow Ambulance came to transport him to the hospital, but a short time later, they called for help, saying they were being attacked and stabbed.
Champaign police rushed to the scene, where they found Lt. Courtney Moravek, firefighter Robert Poynton and an EMT with serious injuries from a stabbing. A responding medical unit was restraining Lewis.
In court Wednesday, we learned Poynton was stabbed nine times, twice in the head. Moravek was stabbed in the back. The EMT was stabbed in the bicep. The EMT was able to tackle Lewis and Moravek helped pin him to the ground.
In 2021, Lewis pleaded guilty to setting his family home on fire and was sentenced to 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, but was credited for 1 year.
According to Champaign Fire, both Lt. Moravek and FF Poynton were released from the hospital.
Lewis is due back in court October 1.
Lewis is also on probation in Knox County for possession of a weapon. His probation was set to end next month.
