DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — More details are being released by police about a crash that left a teenage motorcyclist from Mt. Zion hospitalized and fighting for their life.
Decatur Police said the crash happened May 17 at 11:15 p.m. in the 2500 block of North 22nd St. Police said the teen was driving south, and a Chevy Cobalt was heading north. When the car turned left into a parking lot, the two collided.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 16-year-old, was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. They were taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
In a sworn statement obtained by WAND News, police said the teen had a collapsed lung and multiple fractures, including a broken pelvis. The teen was too unstable to be transferred to a higher level of care trauma hospital.Â
The driver of the car, 63-year-old Karen Boehm of Decatur, was also taken to the hospital and toxicology reports show there were methamphetamines and amphetamines in Boehm's system.Â
In the sworn statement, police said Boehm made jokes when officers were explaining the seriousness of the crash to her and made a comment about how she "beat" a previous DUI charge in Florida.Â
They said she first denied being under the influence but admitted to taking a couple of "hits" of marijuana the night before.Â
Police said she had a revoked license as a result of a previous DUI conviction.Â
Decatur Police arrested her, and she is facing several charges including Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Drugs causing great bodily harm, Driving with a revoked license.
