DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The warmer weather and the summer season typically brings an increase in crime. Newly appointed Decatur Police Department Chief, Brad Allen, say they have a wealth of resources available to help curb crime this summer.Â
As spring turns to summer, Chief Allen said that crime numbers are to be expected, and that DPD is continuing to work to make the city safer.Â
"We're not in the outside of the norm of this time of year. We have had a couple, shootings over the last couple of weeks, even since I've been the chief. So we've taken our resources like we do every spring, and we've really focused on on getting out there and working to combat that." Allen said.
Allen explained that DPD's Community Action Team (CAT) will continue to work at reducing gun violence and getting violent offenders off the streets.Â
"We've got those teams out and they're working to hit the areas, find the people, and make it safer by trying to curb the gun violence. Let the community know that we're working hard as the summer approaches, and let those people know that we're not turning a blind eye to it." Allen said.Â
DPD also plans to continue enforcing the curfew. Allen explained that a portion of crime that has been happening stems from teens aged 14 to 20 years old.
"We're going to use any resource and anything we can to to put a stop to it." he explained "If we can take them home for a curfew violation, we will do that."
Sunday through Thursday, curfew will run from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, curfew will go from 12:01 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
