Decatur – Burgers are sizzling on the grill at a new Krekel’s in Decatur.
Started in the 1950’s as King Krekel’s the hamburger restaurant is a long time Decatur area favorite. The Krekel’s West location has been located in the Colonial Mall. A building project started in November is now complete and the restaurant has opened its doors a few hundred yards away from the old location on Oakland Avenue.
The owners, Todd and Cindy Teel are excited. Todd has looked forward to this day having worked for his grandfather at Krekel’s earning $2 an hour back in the eateries early days.
“I think the customers are more excited, probably, than we are,” Cindy told WAND’s Doug Wolfe on opening day.
“We’re just looking forward to getting the doors open and keep serving hamburgers that Decatur’s known for,” Todd added.
The new Krekel’s added a couple of new features. This restaurant will have a drive-through window and a grilled chicken sandwich will be added to the menu in the near future.
Krekel’s West will have all of the old favorites including hamburgers, spicy chicken sandwiches, lemon ice cream and shakes.
