DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The National Weather Service in Lincoln said four tornadoes touched down in central Illinois on Wednesday.

One tornado touched down roughly two miles north of Janesville in Coles County. The tornado was about 30 yards wide and on the ground for roughly a half-mile. It touched down shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A second touched down approximately three miles northeast of Effingham. NWS said the tornado was on the ground for 1.5 miles and was 30 yards wide.  

NWS also confirmed an EF-0 tornado with 80 mph winds touched down near Pope Township. And an EF-2 tornado with 114 mph winds was reported just east of Shobonier.

NWS said there was no reported damage from any of the tornadoes. There were also no reports of injuries.

Wednesday evening storms brought strong winds, heavy rain, and hail along parts of I-70. Some areas saw heavy downpours that brought more than an inch of rain in just a few hours. 

More than 20 tornadoes have been reported across parts of central Illinois in 2025. The NWS Storm Prediction Center has reported 79 tornadoes across all of Illinois this year. There were 28 during the same time period last year.
