SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A public hearing was held to discuss the Pawnee power plant project Friday.
EmberClear wants the land for a natural gas plant south of Pawnee.
It would cost $1 billion.
The company wants the land to be declared an enterprise zone so it can get tax breaks.
Springfield, the county, and developers signed a memorandum of understanding.
They have the ability to take the land out of the enterprise zone whenever they want.
The decision about the enterprise zone could come soon, possibly before the end of the year.
However, the plant would not be built until at least 2023.
