CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Students at the University of Illinois will have a strange return to campus following spring break, with 450 students relocating after dormitory Snyder Hall flooded.

The basement of the residence hall flooded on Sunday, and U of I officials said that the damage was too severe to repair before the end of the semester.

U of I officials said the flood severely impacted critical building systems, including electricity, elevators, water heaters, card access systems, and data infrastructure. However, no students' belongings were affected.

Sean Hudson is a sophomore, and he will be moved to graduate housing, which means he will have to quit his job.  "I work at the dining hall right next to Snyder Hall. So it would be very difficult to continue going to work from all the way across campus because I got transferred to Daniels Hall." he said.

Even though this big change is happening in the middle of the semester, Sean's mother, Kristi Hudson said she is grateful for the transparency and  communication. "I certainly understand why they didn't get a hold of us on Sunday or Monday. It would have been giving us little of no information. This was a complete statement, so we're able to follow what's going on." she said.

There is enough existing space in University Housing for the displaced students, but most will not be able to keep their current roommates. Many students will be put in temporary housing, which could include repurposed lounges in dorm halls.

Relocation will happen between Saturday, March 21 and Monday, March 23. Students will be able to sign up for a relocation time online. U of I is also asking for student volunteers to help in the moving process.
