SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A retired Springfield Police Sergeant has been charged with a count of aggravated DUI after severely injuring two people on a motorcycle.
Michael A. Egan, 50, was driving on E. Lake Shore Dr. when he turned directly in front of a motorcycle on Thursday night, according to Illinois State Police. The driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown off and taken to the hospital with significant injuries.
At the crash scene, Springfield officers called in Illinois State Police to investigate. ISP conducted a blood draw and sent the results to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Egan was arrested on Monday by ISP and the U.S. Marshals, and transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
In a news release, Springfield PD said it's conducting an internal investigation to ensure that all policies and procedures were adhered to by Springfield Police personnel at the scene.
“Both and active and retired law enforcement officers must be held to the same standards to maintain public trust and uphold the integrity of the Springfield Police Department,” stated Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette.
On Monday, demonstrators showed up to the Municipal Center East building in Springfield to demand accountability from the department.
WAND News has reached out to the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office for comment on the charge.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
