SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Two motorcyclists were left seriously injured after being struck by a driver in Springfield, police said.
Illinois State Police said the crash happened in the 400 block of East Lake Shore Dr. at 9:21 p.m. Thursday.
ISP said a vehicle driven by 50-year-old Michael A. Egan of Springfield was going north on E. Lake Shore Dr. while a motorcycle was traveling south. Troopers said Egan failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn in front of the motorcycle.
The driver and a passenger on the motorcycle were ejected and taken to the hospital with significant injuries.
The Springfield Police Department confirmed that Egan is a recently retired Springfield Police Sergeant.
In a news release, the department said it's conducting an internal investigation to ensure that all policies and procedures were adhered to by Springfield Police personnel at the scene.
“Both and active and retired law enforcement officers must be held to the same standards to maintain public trust and uphold the integrity of the Springfield Police Department,” stated Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette.
Egan was cited for the crash. ISP contacted the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office and said additional charges may be filed pending toxicology report results.
No other information is being released at this time.
