SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — At Monday's Sangamon County board meeting, board members passed a vote to have a referendum on April's ballot that could do away with the Sangamon County Recorder's office.Â
County Board Member Tony DelGiorno proposed a resolution that would add a question to the ballot for the Consolidated election on April 1, 2025, that would eliminate the office of Recorder of Sangamon County, closing officially on April 1, 2026. DelGiorno's amendment was shot down in favor of Tom Madonia Jr.'s amendment, which moved the question to a later ballot and included contracting a consulting service to evaluate merging tactics.Â
Once Madonia's amended resolution was approved, DelGiorno and Board Member Sam Cahnman presented multiple amendments, which ultimately got passed. The completed resolution with all amendments eliminated the use of a consulting service, moved the question to the April 1, 2025, ballot, and officially closes the office of the Recorder of Sangamon County on December 1, 2026.
Sangamon County residents can expect a question on their ballot this April at the Consolidated Election that will give them the power to eliminate the County Recorder position.
