(WAND) – Smoke alarms using a mom’s voice wake children better than those with a high-pitched tone.
Researchers from Nationwide Children’s Hospital tested four types of smoke alarms. They found that a sleeping child was three times more likely to wake-up when hearing their mother’s voice than beeps or tones.
Around 90 percent of children woke up by voice alarms, and 53 percent woke up by the sound of a tone.
Kids also left their bedrooms much faster after hearing a voice alarm. With a tone alarm kids left the room in an average 282 second escape time. While kids who woke up with a voice left the room in about 156 seconds.
The study also showed that having the child’s name in the voice smoke alarm didn’t affect how quickly the child woke up.
Children are more likely to die or be injured in house fires than teenagers or young adults, according to the study.
