DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Students in the Decatur area have taken advantage of the first heavy snowfall.
While some students raced towards their sleds, others got to work lending a hand shoveling snow for the community.
"We've been shoveling snow all day. And every time we're driving around, we help people get out of the snow whenever they need to. And whoever is stuck. We helped like three cars already," said Dylan Davis, senior at Cerro Gordo high school.
Not only is it a way to spend time with your friends, but it's a way to help out those in the community as well.Â
"You know, it's a good time to spend out with your buddies. I mean, it's really peaceful in the morning… but there's something satisfying about it too. Like scooping all the snow off the sidewalks and stuff just to come back in like, two hours later because it's still snowing is sometimes fun, sometimes pretty brutal.." said Ian Bettinger, graduate of Cerro Gordo High School.
But once all the hard work is done, it's time to slide down those hills.Â
While many are excited for the snow, others are even more excited to get back to school.
"Because I get to see my friends," said elementary school student Caylee Hargrove.
The day off has also affected families too.Â
"We got a lot of snow. We usually don't so we figured it'd be a good time to get out and enjoy it for once..And at my job too, we really don't get time off for snow, but we ended up getting the day off, so we might as well take advantage of it," said CHI Overhead Doors worker Justin Goodbear.
As the day winds down, families wrapped up on their sledding and got ready to warm up at home.Â
"Probably go home, sit by the fire, and drink hot chocolate," said Goodbear.
