SPRINGFIELD - A Springfield man has been arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service on multiple charges, including aggravated battery to a police officer and driving under the influence.

Authorities say Thomas Shepherd, 20, was arrested on August 2 on warrants for parole violation, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, driving under the influence, aggravated battery to a police officer, and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Springfield police say Shepherd was allegedly involved in an incident at the intersection of Wirt Avenue and East Kansas Street at about 3:27 a.m. on July 31.  According to the preliminary investigation into the incident, officers say Shepherd allegedly drove off of the roadway and swerved in order to strike a police officer who was conducting traffic control on foot.  The officer was not seriously injured.

Springfield police also say Shepherd allegedly continued to drive recklessly, leading another officer on a pursuit that reached speeds of over 80 miles per hour.

Shepherd is currently in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.  We will provide more information as it becomes available.
