SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill heading to the Illinois House floor could require all assisted living and shared homes to have an AED on-site.
Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) presents a proposal before the House Human Services Committee on March 26, 2025.
The plan also calls for all healthcare employees at the facility to be trained on how to use defibrillators in emergencies.
Sponsors told the House Human Services Committee Wednesday that 292 nursing homes already have AEDs. However, that number only makes up 54% of the facilities across the state.
"To address the cost, we're extending the effective date until January 1, 2030 to allow nursing homes sufficient time to prepare for the budgetary impact," said Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet).
House Bill 1287 passed unanimously out of the House Human Services Committee and now heads to the House floor.
Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) has an identical proposal, but her legislation did not pass out of committee before the Senate deadline last week.
