SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State senators passed a bill Wednesday to ban companies from manufacturing or selling cosmetic products containing forever chemicals.
The ban would apply to PFAS found in makeup, hair and nail products, soaps, lotion, tanning products, perfume and cologne.
Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) said Illinois should ensure beauty products are safe for everyone.
"For too long, the cosmetics industry has operated without the kind of oversight we apply to food, medicine and drinking water," Hunter said. "We are working to close that gap and put Illinois at the forefront of a national movement to hold manufacturers accountable for what goes into their products and onto our skin."
House Bill 3409 passed unanimously out of the Senate. The proposal now moves back to the House due to amended language. It received a 69-38 vote in the House last year.Â
"We just want to make sure our beauty products are safe here in Illinois because some of these contain dangerous chemicals. Toxic metals cause severe health issues including neurological damage, skin rashes, kidney damage and irreparable harm," said Rep. Sonya Harper (D-Chicago).Â
