SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State senators could pass a bill in the coming weeks to ban companies from manufacturing or selling cosmetic products containing forever chemicals.

The ban would apply to PFAS found in makeup, hair and nail products, soaps, lotion, tanning products, perfume and cologne.

Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) told reporters Wednesday that Illinois should ensure beauty products are safe for everyone.

"Prolonged exposure has been linked to a range of serious health outcomes, including certain cancers, hormonal disruption and immune system damage," Hunter said.

House Bill 3409 passed out of the House last year on a 69-38 vote, but Hunter hopes to get the proposal across the finish line before session ends next month.

"This measure sends a clear message," Hunter said. "If you want to sell in Illinois, your products must meet the health and safety standards our families deserve."
