The proposal would require insurance companies to cover expenses for standard fertility preservation and follow-up services regardless of medical necessity or diagnosis of infertility.

The proposal would require insurance companies to cover expenses for standard fertility preservation and follow-up services regardless of medical necessity or diagnosis of infertility.

Sen. Graciela Guzman (D-Chicago) said the legislation includes coverage for freezing of embryos, eggs, ovarian tissue, and other kinds of tissue for future reproduction.

"Under current law, Illinois regulated health insurance plans are only required to provide coverage for medically-necessary standard fertility preservation services, making these treatments largely inaccessible because of their high out-of-pocket cost," Guzman said.

The Senate Insurance Committee only held a subject matter hearing on the plan Wednesday. However, the committee could move the bill to the Senate floor before the chamber's voting deadline next week.
