SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to clarify what school employees should do after they hear about a threat of gun violence.

Rep. CD Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) told WAND News this spring that his plan requires school officials to immediately notify the principal's office if there is any threat of gun violence on school grounds. The principal should attempt to notify the offending student's parents as soon as possible so they ensure the student does not have access to a firearm.

"As a law abiding gun owner, I look at this and I say we have to do everything possible to keep gun violence from happening," Davidsmeyer said.

Davidsmeyer filed this legislation after a student in his district threatened to shoot another child on school grounds. That incident was reported to a teacher, but the teacher did not report it to the principal because it was only a threat.

"I don't want to take any threats of violence lightly," Davidsmeyer said. "If we can help to ensure these horrific incidents no longer happen, our gun rights will not be under constant attack by anti-gun politicians."

House Bill 1316 took effect Friday.
