GEORGETOWN, Ill. (WAND) — Shelby Franzen's science class at Mary Miller Jr. High helps prepare students for success.
“Getting them more interested in other types of science than just reading from a book is really my main goal,” said STEM Teacher, Shelby Franzen.
Franzen said one of her main goals is getting students outside of the classroom to experiment on their own.
“We did an insect collection not too long ago where students actually had to go outside and collect insects," explained Franzen. "They weren’t stuck in the building doing reading or just a research project online. They had to actually go find insects and do the research on those insects.”
Students like Scarlet Rife couldn't wait to see what Miss Franzen's class was all about.
“When I was in the other grades, I think it was seeing all the 8th graders and them doing really fun projects and speaking about it, and I think that made me really excited,” said Rife.
The class also worked on dissecting frogs.
