(WAND) - The Supreme Court upheld a broad conception of birthright citizenship Tuesday, rejecting an executive order by President Donald Trump that children born to parents who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens.
The decision comes on the final day of a Supreme Court term that has largely ruled in President Trump's favor.Â
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement on the Supreme Court's Trump v. Barbara decision.Â
"Today the Supreme Court sided with the Constitution. Since the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, the Constitution has left little to the imagination: all persons born or naturalized in the United States are United States citizens. Today's ruling reaffirms the foundational values of America and protects the rights and freedoms of those who call it home."Â
Pritzker criticized Trump for "trying to circumvent the Rule of Law through illegal executive actions." The Governor called the President a racist and said that outlook make him incapable of understanding "that birthright citizenship helps make America great."
