DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - "We've had an overabundance of animals come in recently..." explained Kasey Snyder, Director at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter. Snyder and her team taking to social media this week, sharing they are completely out of space.

"Within the last two weeks, we've actually had 66 dogs and 38 cats come in now up for adoption..." Snyder added, sharing that since the January they've had 490 animals total.

Many of these pets have been given up by their owners. "Actually, 218 of the animals that have come in during 2025 were surrendered." Snyder shared, the two most common reasons that owners surrender their pets are due to financials or moving.

Early spring time is a popular period for owners to surrender their pets, following the holiday season. Snyder also added, with cat breeding season approaching, the extra space is needed. "The biggest population we have right now are adult cats, so we really need to start making room for when those pregnant moms come in."

The team at the shelter is working hard to make sure these furry friends are cared for, played with, and loved while they wait for that forever home.

From now, through the end of the month, adoption fees are reduced.

"When you're adopting, you're not only getting that animal out of here, but you're opening up a space for another animal waiting to come in."
