CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – A community came together to mourn a teen shot to death in Champaign.
The victim was 16-year-old David Sankey. He was known as “Lil’ Dave” to friends and had a reputation for bringing joy to everyone he met with a contagious personality – one everyone remembered in a Wednesday night vigil.
“Once he met you, you were no longer a stranger,” one person said.
Police found Sankey with a serious gunshot wound at about 8:31 p.m. Tuesday. They moved hem from the scene – located at Paula Drive and Larkspur Lane - to a hospital, where he died at about 10:30 that night.
Sankey was a student at Central High School, which decided to reschedule a Friday night football game against Centennial High School.
The victim’s friends and family wrote messages of love and support on balloons and pictures of Sankey. His family is demanding justice and pushing for an end to gun violence.
