DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — After Decatur police confirmed that a camera hidden in the Decatur Planet Fitness tanning room recorded 10 people -- including a juvenile -- one of the victims spoke out to raise awareness.
Angela Parker said she had never been to Planet Fitness before and was not a member there. But when she went for the first time on March 14 with her husband, all she wanted to do was go in the tanning beds.Â
Days later, Parker was contacted by police and told that she was the first in a list of 10 people who had been recorded with a hidden camera.
"Immediately beforehand on the tape that they reviewed, they saw gentleman go into that booth, place a recording device, and leave. I was the very first patron after that," said Parker.
Now, Parker said she spends every day in fear, not knowing who out there could have seen the illicit video of her.
"I don't know who's seen that tape. I don't know if that gentleman streamed that tape on a live stream and it went on a live stream to somewhere, to some friends and family. I have no idea who's seen me, and who hasn't." Parker said not knowing who has seen it is the most frightening part. "And to not know that, it's very scary. Scary. Makes me very nervous and very anxious, specifically out in public, now."
She said she had been in contact with Planet Fitness Corporate, who sent a similar statement to her, as they had to the press.
"They're, of course, very sorry for all of what had happened, but they basically almost gave me the same blanket statement...like 'our priority is having people feeling privacy there.' And there was no privacy there whatsoever in my instance," stated Parker.Â
She explained that she felt incredibly frustrated with their response. "Their last response was, 'we hope that we can get you back into Planet Fitness.' And I just thought, 'are you kidding me? This will be my first and last time at Planet Fitness, thank you very much.'"
Parker said she was contacted by the State's Attorney who will be sending a victim claim form for her to complete. She said on top of dealing with the violation she experienced, she is also dealing with the legal process.
"I've never had to deal with something like this, but it's very disturbing," said Parker.
Parker said she hopes Barone is brought to justice, and that she is looking to pursue her own form of justice as well.
"I've thought about it, I've discussed it with my family and my husband. I feel in this particular regard, I truly feel justified by taking legal action towards Planet Fitness and civil action -- if I can -- towards Mr. Barone."
She said that the experience had been traumatic, and that the public should know about what happened. Parker said in coming forward with her story, she hoped to bring awareness to the issue so that it wouldn't be ignored.
