CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - In a matter of just a few days, college football players from across the nation will have their childhood dreams realized by hearing their name picked at the 2026 NFL Draft.
The "Steel City" of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is preparing for millions of fans to flood the streets with excitement as their favorite teams build for the future.
For Illinois football, the unknown of what lies ahead is most exciting. While many draft analysts expect only a few Illini players will be taken in the draft, any football expert or casual fan will say that each year there are surprises.
What is not a surprise is the expectation that edge rusher Gabe Jacas is likely to be the first Illinois player taken in this year's draft. As one of the best defensive players in all of college football, Jacas earned All-American honors for his ability to sack the quarterback (11 in senior season) and force fumbles (3 in senior season). Analysts have cited his strength and speed as assets that can benefit any NFL team. According to NFL.com, Jacas is projected as a 3rd round pick.
There are plenty of offensive linemen to choose from in the 2026 NFL Draft class, but when it comes to Illinois, J.C. Davis is the best available from the program. The offensive tackle was a unanimous All-Big Ten selection and earned fourth-team All-American honors. With 49 starts throughout his college career, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the #3 ranked Left Tackle in the NCAA. While NFL.com does not give Davis high grades among the player rankings, teams could be willing to take a chance on him in the later rounds.
Fans in the orange and blue made quarterback Luke Altmyer feel right at home following his transfer from Ole Miss. He closed out his Illinois career as one of the most effective passers to wear the uniform, ranking 1st in career passer rating (144.31), 1st in career completion percentage (64.36%), 2nd in career wins (23), and 2nd in career TD passes (57). While Altmyer solidified himself as an effective passer at the collegiate level, the pros demand much more. As of now, many experts believe Altmyer isn't likely to be taken as an NFL Draft pick. However, many suggest a team may take a chance on him with a UFA deal.
In 2025, wide receiver Pat Bryant was the lone Illini player taken in the NFL Draft. He was picked by the Denver Broncos with the 74th overall pick in the 3rd round, higher than numerous experts had expected.Â
Three years ago, cornerback Devon Witherspoon became the first Illinois player since 2012 to be selected in the first round. Only a matter of months ago, he helped the Seattle Seahawks win Super Bowl LX.
The 2026 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 23, with the first round beginning around 7pm.
