MAROA, Ill. (WAND) - About eight months after losing in the state championship game, Maroa Forsyth football is looking forward to a new year with another chance.

"They came back hungry. They know the standard here," said Head Coach Josh Jostes. "They know what to expect and they're willing to put in that time."

The players know that only hard work will get them where they want to go.

"We have to work hard every day," said senior tight end and linebacker Troy Pulliam. "Just because we're a good team, it's not going to get handed to us on a silver platter. We still have to put in the work like everyone else."

The Trojans return key skill players, as well as guys in the trenches who have played meaningful snaps.

"We have some experience up front. Last year we had none," Jostes said. "This year, we return seven kids that started games for us up there. So, that kind of helps us reset when you have that kind of experience up front. We are replacing several outstanding skill kids, but obviously our quarterback and number one wide receiver return."

Players have been itching to strap on the pads again.

"I can't wait," said Tanner Jacobs, a senior defensive tackle and left guard. "I've been dreaming about this since winter, so I can't wait to put the pads back on and get rolling."

Maroa Forsyth opens up the season at home against Athens.
