Tolono Unity fights to the end, comes up shy in 3A title 56-50

NORMAL, Ill. (WAND) - Despite recovering an onside kick and getting into goal line territory, the Unity football team fell short in the 3A state championship to Bryon, 56- 50.

In his first year as head coach of the Rockets, Tony Reetz led the team to a state runner-up finish.

Former coach Scott Hamilton retired following the Rockets' 2024 season, where they lost in the state semis. During his time at the helm, Unity finished as runners-up in state six times, most recently in 2021.

Reetz inherited a talented team entering 2025. On their road to the playoffs, Tolono had only one loss on the season to Bloomington Central Catholic, a program who finished as Illini Prairie Conference champions and undefeated in the regular season.

Throughout the playoffs, Unity's potent offense prevailed. The team averaged 39 points-per-game on the road to the state championship. Beyond a narrow victory over Monticello in the second round 21-20, the Rockets offense dominated the competition.
