CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)—Following an eight-day strike, University of Illinois Foodservice and building workers represented by SEIU Local 73 have reached a three-year contract agreement.
The union went on strike, picketing at the University of Illinois on September 23. This came after SEIU Local 73 rejected a contract after negotiations failed.
“We would have ended up with a raise of only fifty-four cents had we not gone on strike,” said Melody Decker, Chapter 119 President and Building Service Worker. “For every contract, we are forced to fight for fair wages. When will UIUC leadership invest in its workers the way it invests in its sports teams?”
The three-year contract includes raises of 85 cents, 90 cents, and 1 dollar and a $500 signing bonus. The union says they were also told that depending on demand, some food service workers will not be laid off during the summer months. If they are laid off, they will be offered other positions. Those working during the summer are guaranteed 40 hours a week. They add that their dining workers will now reach top pay in just two years.
“This hard-fought victory doesn’t end here. Leadership of the $8 billion University of Illinois system continually fails to prioritize the workers who keep the universities clean, safe, and functioning.,” said Dian Palmer, SEIU Local 73 President.
University of Illinois Spokesperson Robin Kaler said the university is pleased with the agreement reached.
"The agreement is consistent with our mutual goal of providing attractive wages in line with the market and making our campus a desirable place to work. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with SEIU Local 73 and other union-represented employees to make our campus an excellent place to live, study, and work." said Kaler.
