NEW BERLIN, Ill. (WAND) — A family-owned winery just west of Springfield is gaining attention across Central Illinois — not only for its award-winning wines, but for its growing reputation as a live-music destination.

Tucked away off Irish Road sits Danenberger Family Vineyards (DFV), built on the grounds of the Sullivan family farm dating back to the 1800s. Over the last 12 years, owner Susan Danenberger has transformed the quiet property into a vibrant winery, entertainment venue, and community gathering space.

“There's still a lot of people who come here and say, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve heard about it, but I had no idea,’” Danenberger said.

Hundreds of musicians have now performed at DFV, turning the rural venue into a surprising hotspot for live entertainment.

“The band Lit, Here Come the Mummies, Cooper Allen — so many,” Danenberger said. “This is really a destination in Central Illinois.”

Autographed guitars line the walls, serving as mementos of the artists who have taken the stage. The performance area, built with recycled shipping containers, can seat more than 600 guests.

“This is my favorite spot,” Danenberger added as she pointed out the stage setup. “Got your sound man Scooter, and Dave Carter does our lights — he’s really good.”

DFV features a kitchen offering food during events, a California-style outdoor sitting area, and even a newly added boutique.

“Pick up a little knick-knack to take home,” Danenberger joked. “Who doesn’t like to sip and shop?”

Despite the bustling entertainment scene, wine remains the heart of the operation. Danenberger grows grapes on-site, crafting award-winning varieties such as Carmin, Rouge, and Paper Moon.

Her flagship wine comes from her favorite grape — cabernet franc harvested in 2021. Part of the batch is aging in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel, which will become a specialty release called Carmin After Dark.

She also shared her go-to tip for opening a bottle properly: “The key is using a double-hinged corkscrew. Use the leverage, lift it up — it does the work for you.”
