DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - For parents and grandparents looking for something fun and educational to do with the kids, one Decatur destination continues to deliver decades of discovery.

The Children’s Museum of Illinois, recognized as one of the top children’s museums in the country, is celebrating 30 years of learning through play — a journey that started in a basement and has grown into a 27,000-square-foot, two-story attraction.

The museum first opened its doors in 1995, but its mission began years earlier with a vision from the Decatur Area Arts Council and the Junior Welfare Association. Their goal: create an interactive museum designed especially for children ages 0 to 10.

Today, that vision thrives with a variety of hands-on exhibits and educational programs.

“We have Girls Who Code, Chem Girls, and other STEM programs,” said Melanie Billbrey-Snivey, Director of Education. “Coming up, we’re launching ‘She Builds,’ a new engineering program for girls.”

Located next to the Scovill Zoo, the museum invites visitors to explore its interactive exhibits — from local families to travelers like Ellis and his grandmother, Rene, visiting from Long Island.

“We love cheese pizza — what’s your favorite?” Rene said, laughing with her grandson as they played with the runaway balls exhibit.

One of the most popular additions is Heroes Hall, opened in 2018, featuring a Sangamon County Sheriff’s squad car and other first responder exhibits. A new police driving simulator is set to open next month, adding another hands-on experience for young visitors.

Outside, families can climb aboard a fire truck and even explore a real helicopter.

To mark its 30th anniversary, the museum has launched a $300,000 capital campaign, funded entirely through donations, to continue expanding exhibits and programs.

“I just enjoy working here where everyone is so passionate,” said Keenan Wilcott, Operations Manager. “It’s a place to be a kid again — every day.”

For many families, the museum has become a cherished stop in Decatur.

“It’s the perfect activity for kids and grandparents,” Rene added.

A place to learn, explore, and make memories — the Children’s Museum of Illinois continues to prove that play and learning go hand in hand.
